First Day

Don't you love traveling?

Yesterday we traveled all day and finally made it to Antigua. Our hotel is called “Posada de Don Rodrigo” and it is remarkably beautiful. The flights were smooth, only a few hiccups, but we’ve made it in one piece and on time. Not even one piece of luggage was lost, despite the Honduras group sprinting through the airport to catch our flight in San Salvador. But we even managed to have a great time on our layover. Here’s a pic of Ben Brown and Gaines Myer playing a game called, “I’m having so much fun.” It’s kind of hard to explain, but the contestants aren’t allowed to laugh; an impossible feat when you are rubbing the ears of your opponent and staring into his eyes.

I was a bit hungry in the San Salvador airport and bought myself a snack: some Cup Noodles and a Coke Zero. When she handed me the freshly microwaved cup and the Coke, she said in English, “Five dollars.” Five dollars for some Ramen noodles and a Coke. That’s about a 1,000% markup. So, if you want to treat your loved ones to an expensive meal, now you know where to go: the snack bar in the San Salvador airport. Anyway, we finally landed in Guatemala City and took a short trip to Antigua. We are here safely and are grateful to God, who always leads us triumphantly.

We woke up early in Antigua to some beautiful sights.
Breakfast was delicious: pancakes or eggs with black beans. mmmmmm. You can tell Caitlin and Whitney sure loved them.
Wayne, our missionary guide, inspired us with a message about God's purposes for us here in Guatemala. Philippians 1:6 "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." God is the all-powerful King was pleased to bring us here to accomplish whatever purposes He may have.

Today we will spend the morning in Antigua, checking out this historic city, buying stuff in the markets, and trying out some phrases in our helpful Spanish phrasebook, like “Where can I buy a fake mustache?” “¿Donde puedo comprar un bigote falso?” We will also be doing prayer walks in various parts of the city, asking God to bless the social efforts and the preaching of the gospel by faithful Christians in this city. In Guatemala, the religious background is Mayan paganism that was swallowed up by the Spanish Roman Catholics. So there are lots of (BEAUTIFUL) Roman Catholic churches that retain much of the pagan elements of superstition and sacrifice. Jesus and the saints are often just added to their pantheon of gods. Needless to say, there is much spiritual darkness and fear. So, as we walk we are praying for God to empower and fill Christians and gospel-believing churches with power and boldness as they hold forth freedom in the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

Then we’ll spend the day traveling to Santiago Atitlan, the focus of our mission. Today’s our Dramamine day through the mountains. Please pray for group dynamics, for safe travel and for quality Christian fellowship all to God’s glory. So, we hope your are having a worshipful Lord's day. We certainly will.
And Marshall will call home as soon as he can get this thing to work.
